As a youngster, Les was riding the sweep, a device pulled around and around by a horse. Les was wearing a string for a garter to hold his socks up. Pulling his leg back to tie the string, his heel got caught in the cogs of the sweep. It ground his heel until all that was left of his shoe was the top, toe and laces. Les had a terrible scare and he carried it to his grave (ibid).
