Gerald Thomas Gilman, age 92, of Beach, North Dakota, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006 at the Glendive Medical Center in Glendive, Montana.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 P.M. , Tuesday, June 20, 2006 at the United Community Church in Beach, North Dakota. Interment with Military Honors will be in the Beach City Cemetery with the Reverend Warren Maxted officiating. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home in Beach is entrusted with arrangements.
Gerald was born October 23, 1913, in Beach, North Dakota, the son of Thomas Arthur and Pearl Olive (Logan) Gilman. He was raised and educated in Beach. Gerald married Helen Gilman on February 24, 1934, in Wibaux, Montana.
In 1936, Gerald and Helen moved to Beach where they operated a service station.
Gerald entered the United States Army on February 10, 1943 in Fort Snelling, Minnesota.
Gerald served in the Aleutian Islands on the coast of Alaska and was later deployed to Sicily and came up through Italy where he engaged in the Battle of Mount Belvedere. After serving in Italy he was headed towards the Pacific when the war ended. Gerald received the Asiatic-Pacific Theater Service Medal, The European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Service Medal, one Overseas Service Bar, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Bronze Star Medal. Gerald received an honorable discharge from the military on September 29, 1945.
In 1950 Gerald and Helen bought the J.P. Reeves ranch north of Beach.
Gerald was a member of the United Community Church. He was a founding member of the American Legion in Beach and served as it's first Treasurer. Gerald enjoyed hunting and in later years spending time working on his ranch. He had a lot of friends who appreciated his willingness to go the extra mile for them. He worked for the United States Postal Service for 50 years carrying mail to Moser, North Dakota and later Trotters, North Dakota. He also delivered mail from Beach to Miles City, Montana from 1968-1980.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen; one sister, Bernice Gilman and two brothers, Harris and Rex Gilman.
He is survived by two sons, Mac Gilman and his wife Linda of Beach and Gary Gilman and his wife Vicki of Billings, Montana; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Monk Gilman and his wife Loma of Beach and Thomas A. Gilman and his wife Beverly of Kalispell, Montana and one sister, Alleen Berg of Prior Lake, Minnesota. Memorials may be made to The Beach Veteran's Memorial in care of Monk Gilman, PO Box 897, Beach, ND 58621.
