Served in the Civil War Co B 37th Illinois Infantry, Pvt (18 Sep 1861-29 Sep 1864).
While in the service, Daniel contracted an illness that plagued him for the remainder of his life, (see pension file).
Married Catherine Emery on the 5th of January 1865 in Lafayette, Stark County, Illinois.
They had three children: Minnie Rose, Ada Ruth, born in Illinois, and Walter who was born in Iowa.
He married 2nd Sarah Ann "Sally" Jackson on the 1st of May 1873 in Marshall Town, Iowa. They had three children: Gertrude, Mabel, and Claude.
Daniel and Sally moved to Sheridan County, Nebraska in the late 1880s to early 1890s, where he raised stock.
Daniel's health issues forced him to retire about 1909. He turned the running of the ranch over to his son and moved to Center, Nebraska
Daniel died from pneumonia while visiting his daughter in Iowa.
