Sidney Rice, son of Obed and Sarah (Kinney) Rice, was born in Troy, NY, August 4, 1810. He became an orphan at the age of 13 years. Like his father, he was a man who loved books and was devout. He was apprenticed to one of his father's friends to learn the hardware business.

He married Julia Redfield Hall, daughter of Timothy Hall, of Troy, NY, on August 12, 1840.

In the spring of 1843, he headed west and settled at Cincinnati, which he afterwards regarded as his home though he lived in Newport, KY, on the opposite side of the river, for a number of years. His business interests were in Cincinnati.

His wife died Apr 16, 1882. The family lie buried in Spring Grove Cemetery, back of Cincinnati.
