Obituary ~ Montgomery Messenger 18 Nov 1993 Mrs. Ida C. Svoboda of New Prague, died on Monday morning, Nov.15, at Mala Strana Health Care Center in New Prague. She had observed her 100th birthday this year. A native of Belle Plaine Township, Ida Svoboda was born on April 25,1893. Her parents were Adam and Katherine (Andre) Ruhland, her mother having been a native of France. She attended a Le Sueur County District School at Union Hill. Ida Ruhland and John A. Svoboda were married at St John Catholic Church, Union Hill, on Oct.10, 1917. They made their home at New Prague. Mr. Svoboda died on Aug. 29,1938. Mrs. Svoboda was employed for 21 years as a cook at St. Wenceslaus Church and School until her retirement at the age of 72 years. She was a member of the St. Wenceslaus Council of Catholic Women, the Third Order of St. Francis and the New Prague Senior Citizens. Mrs. Svoboda is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Alvin and Julia Svoboda, Belle Plaine, LeRoy and Martha Svoboda, Jerome and Ruth Svoboda, and Lloyd and Dorothy Svoboda, all of New Prague, and Sam and Marion Svoboda, Bloomington; and a daughter and son-in-law, Virginia and James Scanlan, Tucson, AZ. She is also survived by 27 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren and a great- great-grandchild. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Svoboda was preceded in death by a son, Ralph Svoboda, who died at the age of three years; a grandson, Mark Svoboda; six brothers, Joseph T., Mike, George, John, Math J., and Frank A. Ruhland, and seven sisters, Celia Schoenecker, Rose Ackerman, Julia Ruhland, Kate Schoenecker, Agnes Schmitt, Lucy Busch and Mary Schoenecker. Funeral services were held at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church on Wednesday at 10 a.m. The Rev. William J. Paron offered the Mass of Christian Burial. Music was by Ambrose Busch, vocal soloist, the Martha Choir and Sr. Danita Sticka, organist. Pallbearers were Roman, Charles, Steve, Joe, John and Bob Svoboda, and John and Mike Scanlan, grandsons of Mrs. Svoboda. Great-grand-children served as honorary pallbearers. Interment was at St. Wenceslaus Cemetery. Visitation was at the Bruzek Funeral Home in New Prague, on Tuesday from 3 until 9 p.m. Members of the New Prague Senior Citizens and the Third Order of St. Francis led the rosary at 4 p.m., members of the Council of Catholic Women led the rosary at 7:15 p.m., and parish prayers were offered at 8 p.m.
