Amos was the son of Millard Lawson and Leota Lawson of Cincinnati and he enlisted in the US Marine Corps on August 7 1967 in Cincinnati OH. He arrived in Vietnam on February 29 1968 where he was assigned for duty with H&S Company, 3d Battalion, 5th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

During the first part of June the Battalion ended participation in Operation ALLEN BROOK and engaged on June 16 in Operation MAMELUKE THRUST under the OPCON (Operational Control) of the 7th Marines in Quang Nam Province. On June 18 Company I and K got heavily engaged with the enemy just north of Football Island, the enemy opened up on the Marines with 50 caliber machine guns, RPG's (Rocket Propelled Grenades) and small arms fire. The battle progressed throughout the day, ending at nightfall. Seven Marines were killed and several more were wounded, one of the day's casualties was LCpl Lawson who was killed in action by fragmentation wounds from a hostile explosive device.
