John W. B. Cole, son of John Stuart Cole and Rowana Herrington, was born on August 19, 1843 in Cayahoga Co, Ohio. Came to Iowa, Poweshiek Co, 1859. Enlisted August 6, 1861, in 10th Iowa Infantry, Co. C; served at New Madrid and Corinth under Pope, at Vicksburg under McPherson, at Missionary Ridge under Sherman, 15th Army Corps, was with Sherman on the march to the sea, through the Carolinas, and at the Grand Review at Washington; discharged August 15, 1865 at Little Rock, Ark. Dec 14, 1865, he m. Minerva Jane Welch- (excerpt from
