Celia Mae Powell Brunk was born in 1887in Glendale, Hamilton County, Ohio. Her father is William Thomas Powell (1864-1945) and her mother is Lydia Jane Brecount (1864-1944).

Celia’s parents came from a unique history of our United States. Her father, William Thomas Powell, was born in 1869 at Crickhowell, Brecknockshire County, Wales. He came across the Atlantic before he was 17 years old.

Her mother, Lydia Jane Brecount’s grandfather, Moses Brecount was a Civil War Soldier. Private Moses Brecount served as a volunteer in the 138th Regiment of the Ohio National Guard in the City of Washington D.C.

It was in 1881 when Celia’s parents got married. Celia was one of twelve children: Ira (1882-), Harry William (1883-1963), Cora D (1884-1960), Clara Mae (1886-1966), Bessie (1889-1966), Gertrude (1892-1943), Roy Ammon (1893-1959), Thomas Stanley (1896-1952), Ruth R (1899-1963), David L (1900-1905) and Rachael (1904-1982).

Celia lived in Glendale Ohio with her many brothers and sisters. She was very close to her sisters: Cora, Clara Mae, Bessie, Gertrude, Ruth and Rachael throughout her life.

Before 1910 Celia moved from her parents house and lived with her sister Cora’s home. Cora was married to Charles Bateman and Cora had her first daughter Pearl about 1909. They lived at 5019 Forest Avenue in Norwood. This must have been when she met her husband, Elmer Brunk.

Celia married Elmer November 22, 1915 in Covington, Kentucky. Celia and Elmer were 27/28 years old when they married. Celia and Elmer lived in Monterey, Jackson Township, Clermont County Ohio where Elmer, her husband was born. Celia and Elmer had their first daughter, Elizabeth Jane in 1916.

About 1920 they moved to 2602 Ida Avenue, Norwood, Ohio. While living in Norwood, Celia and Elmer had two more children, William Stanley (1922-1992) and Doris Ann (1924-1984).

About 1925 Celia and her family moved from Norwood to Pinhook, Monroe Township near Bethel, Ohio. While living at Pinhook, Celia had two more daughters, Boots (Margaret) M (1925-1994) and Muriel Lorraine (1927-2010).

As of 1930, Celia and Elmer were 41 years old. The ages of their children were: Elizabeth-13, William-8, Doris-6, Boots-4 and Muriel-2. Celia and Elmer also brought two additional children into their home at this time: Frank Ritter was 13 years old and his sister Bettie J. Ritter was 9 years old. The Ritter children grew up with the Brunk children and became their siblings. Another child, Lucy Jane, was also adopted into Celia and Elmer’s home a few years later.

With seven+ children in Celia’s home, she was extremely busy. As the children grew she taught her daughters how to sew, knit, crochet, cook and clean the house. In the 1930’s, she did not have an automatic washer and dryer, nor a dish washer. She did it all by hand. Her husband worked and when he came home in the evening she had to have dinner ready for the entire family. As the children grew, her chores became less but a large family meant constant work. Celia was very fortunate that her 5+2+1 children were healthy.

Before 1935, Celia and Elmer moved their family from Pinhook in Monroe Towship closer to Bethel, to an area known as Nicholsville. Her children went to school at Bethel. And yes, they walked to and from school every day.

After the children finished school, the family moved back to Cincinnati. At some point they lived on Erkenbrecker Avenue in Clifton. In 1942, Celia and Elmer were living back in Norwood. Elmer passed away in 1950. Celia moved into an apartment on Gilbert close to Taft Road. She had family stopping in to see her almost every day.

The last five years of her life she lived at her daughter’s, Elizabeth’s home. Celia had a special room and she displayed her salt and pepper shakers that she treasured. She valued them because they were given to her from her husband Elmer, her children, her sisters and her friends. Those salt and pepper shakers were past down to her only two granddaughters. During her last years without her husband, she did enjoy her children and grandchildren. She would visit her daughter’s homes periodically and shared in the holidays with everyone. It was January 24, 1959, eight years after her husband Elmer passed, that she quietly died in her sleep.
