Thomas Linton Smith Jr. Was born at home, on April 23, 1935 in Prineville, Oregon. He died on October 11, 2011 at his home in Powell Butte, Oregon at the age of 76 years. Tom was the 3rd child of Thomas L. and Dorothy H. (Shroy) Smith. His two older sisters are Velma M. (Smith) Cardin and Clara B. (Smith) McCallister. Tom attended school in Prineville. He married Merilda "Micky" E. Taylor and they had two children, William Laddie and Lynn Marie and they later divorced. Their children, William Laddie and Lynn Marie were adopted by their mother and her husband, George Roberts, who raised them. In September of 1959 he married his wife of 52 years, Gwen L. (Perry) Smith. Tom and Gwen are the parents of two children, Tracy Renea and Shaun Michael. Tom and Gwen were blessed with raising one of their grandchildren, Anthony Michael Whitlatch.

Tom served in the US Army Military Police. During his early years he worked with his father at Pine Products until his father's retirement. A short time after he came home from the military, he began to farm at 4C Farms in Madras. He went to Roseburg Lumber for 3 years before returning to 4C Farms. He farmed there until 1980 when he began another career at Central Electric Cooperative in Redmond. He retired in 1997. They moved to their new home in Powell Butte in 1995 and lived there until the time of his death.

Tom had an incredible ability to "Fix anything". He did his research first and was able to make it look easy. He loved riding in the Ochoco Mountains on his four wheeler, working with his hands: carpentry, welding, landscaping, automotive or watches/clocks. He was interested in almost everything that was innovative. Tom loved people and was interested to know their story. He was a strong personality which gave him the strength and fortitude to endure his last battle with cancer long beyond what was expected. He met his challenge with hope, high expectations and a special kind of courage. He was baptized with three of his grandchildren and found much comfort during his last months of his life. This was much to the credit of his son-in-law, Dan Egbert, with whom he shared a special bond.

He is survived by his wife, Gwen; son: Shaun Smith and his wife, Shannon, Coos Bay, OR; son: William Roberts, Prineville, OR; daughter: Tracy Smith-Whitlatch, Prineville, OR; daughter: Lynn Marie (Roberts) Egbert and her husband Dan, LaPine, OR; sister: Velma Cardin; 8 grandchildren: Tony, Joe, Elijah, Michael, Chris, C.J., Steve, and Tina; and 11 great grandchildren.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents, and sister: Clara B. McCallister.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, October 29, 2011 at 10:00 A.M. at Juniper Haven Cemetery, Prineville, Oregon.
