from the Town of Tusten Historian obituary collection, Narrowsburg, NY: "Fred Stengel, Sr., an old resident of this community, died at his home in this village Thursday night, July 15 1897 aged 82 years.
Mr Stengel was sick for several weeks with some organic trouble - the fist time in his life.
He is survived by his wife and the following children: Fred and Henry Stengel and Mrs Lockhard Stewart of North Branch, Mrs Henry Chelius and Mrs John Wagner of Jeffersonville, and Mrs Charles Schneider of Narrowsburg.
He was a native of Germany, having been born in Dannefelz, Rheinfalz.
In 1840 he came to America and four years later was married to Elizabeth Damm, a sister of Valentine Damm of this place.
They had seven children, one of whom died some years ago.
In 1847 he came to Jeffersonville, where he carried on farming until about two years ago,when he sold the farm and bought a house and lot in the village." Sullivan County Record.

The will gives to the widow of the deceased his entire estate, to be used and enjoyed by her during her natural life. After her decease the property is to be divided equally between the children. The following codicil is annexed - The sum of $100.00 is given to a son, Henry Stengel to compensate him for special services rendered the deceased; after thew payment of said sum the hon, Henry Stengel, is to share equally with the other children. The wife, Elizabeth Stengel, is named as sole executrix.
