The son of William Lonzo Tinker and Cora Frost, Oather married Mary "Alice" Schafer on Christmas Day 1934 in Bunker, Reynolds County, Missouri. They were the parents of 5 children.

During the early years of their marriage, the family lived in Sinking, Dent County, Missouri. Oather worked in a saw mill.

At the time of his death at Calhoun Care Center, Oather was 78 years, 1 month and 7 days old.

He was survived by his wife, Alice; 4 daughters; 7 grandsons; and 1 sister, Alice Bounds of Ellington, Missouri.

In addition to his mother and father, Oather was preceded in death by 1 daughter, Cora, who died in infancy.

Visitation was held on 10 Jun 1983 at Hanks Funeral Home in Hardin. Funeral services were conducted there at 1 p.m. the following afternoon.

The family requested that memorials, if desired, be made to the Calhoun Ambulance Fund.

Oather's wife, Alice, passed away in 1993 and was buried next to him.
