Herman Salonen was the son of Jacob and Hedvig Salonen or Arkkelin. After arriving in the United States from Finland in about 1891, he adopted the surname of "Hermanson" for daily use.

On July 29, 1883, Herman married Liisa Haapala. They had three children, daughters Emilia and Alma and son Jacob. Liisa and the children remained in Finland while Herman set out for the Michigan copper mines; they eventually joined him in 1899, and the family settled in Greenland, Michigan.

In February of 1901, Herman was involved in a horrible mining accident that left him with numerous injuries, including a fatal skull fracture. Surviving were his wife and children.
