BR, given a set of tools that belonged to his Grandfather Brooks, taught himself the skill of carpentry in order to better care for his growing family. During WWII he was not drafted due to his arm being "crooked" from many breaks suffered during his childhood on the farm. Instead he worked on projects at Sheppard Air Force Base.
In the forty's, the family moved to 1906 Old Windthorst Road, and BR working out of Northside Lumber Co., built up a reputation of being able to restore and remodel homes.
