Lynn Clawson
15 June 1934 ~
30 April 2009
Lynn Clawson, 74, beloved husband of Suzanne Christianson Quist Clawson, father of four, stepfather of three, Grandpa of twenty two, and Great Grandfather of one, returned to our Heavenly Father in the presence of family and loved ones on 30 April, 2009.
Lynn was a man of all seasons. Born into a poor but hard-working family near Tucson, AZ., he was a child of the depression. His life started humbly—growing up in tents, and a hand-made adobe house. He even spent time sleeping with his brothers under a large oak tree beneath the Arizona night sky. His meager beginnings formed him to become strong and determined in character; the mischievousness of his youth led to a charismatic road in bettering his life; after high school, Lynn joined the United States Marine Corps and served in Korea during the waning days of the war. He returned and graduated college from the University of Arizona and afterwards coached high school athletic teams for a short time until the needs of his family prevailed upon him to join the United States Air Force.
Lynn served as an officer in the Air Force from May of 1959 serving in the Vietnam War where he earned The Bronze Star, The Gallantry Cross, The Vietnamese Air Force Medal of Honor, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. His Air Force service included tours in San Antonio, TX, Honolulu, HI, Cheyenne, WY, Seoul, Korea and Victorville, CA. Lynn honorably retired after 24 years of service in 1983 as a Lieutenant Colonel.
Lynn's second career drew him into Utah's educational system where he served exceptionally as a junior high school guidance counselor in the Alpine School District at Lakeridge Junior High, Orem, UT. from 1988 until 2001. He found great joy and satisfaction when instructing and mentoring students from Lakeridge Jr. High. He often commented that this was the most rewarding and satisfying time of his life. Lynn served as an ordinance worker in the Timpanogas Temple, and served in many bishoprics for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. He spent many hours participating in the indexing program and was able to submit 250,000 names. Lynn spent the remaining years of his wonderful life traveling with his wife Suzanne, visiting his children and grandchildren around the country, and, of course, playing golf, which he loved.
Lynn is survived by his wife, Suzanne Christianson Quist Clawson, of Orem and Saratoga Springs, Utah as well as his sons, Scott and Oden Clawson, daughters, Kathleen Cortado and Saralynn Kramer, step-sons Jim and Channing Quist, and step-daughter Kerrie Witbeck. Lynn is also survived by his lovely sisters, Alice-Mae Schoenberger and Barbara Gelebart of Tucson, AZ, and Julia Rosenhan of Thompson Falls, MT.
Viewing will be Sunday, 3 May 2009 from 6-8 PM at Wing Mortuary, 118 East Main, Lehi, UT. Funeral Services will be Monday, 4 May 2009; open viewing from 9:30 - 10:45 AM; Services at 11:00 AM at the Saratoga Springs Stake Center, 587 South Saratoga Road, Saratoga Springs, UT. Internment with full military honors will be held at the Orem City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Saratoga Springs Police and Fire Departments for the purchasing of mobile defibulators are appreciated.
