Josiah enlisted on 15 Jun 1861 at Georgia as a Private with Company G, 12th Infantry. He was later promoted to Sergeant. On 20 Jul 1864, he was wounded at Peach Tree Creek, Georgia. Josiah was discharged on 08 Aug 1863 for promotion and mustered in that same date assigned to Company F, 66th Infantry Regiment as a Second Lieutenant.
