Funeral services for Alice Backberg, age 96 of the Horizon Manor in Bertha, MN were held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, March 16, 2006 at the Immanuel Lutheran Church at Bartlett Township in Todd County with Reverend William F. Moeller, Jr. presiding. Alice passed away at the Fair Oaks Lodge in Wadena, MN on Monday, March 13, 2006. Alice Martha Dorothea Katharina Backberg was born on November 15, 1909 to Fred and Anna (Spars) Juergens at Bartlett Township in Todd County, Minnesota. She was a member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church most of her life having been baptized, confirmed and married in the church and she remained a faithful member until her death. On March 18, 1931 she married Carl Backberg and they were able to celebrate their 70th anniversary in 2001. She worked as a nurses aid at the hospitals in Staples and Bertha. She hated to retire as she enjoyed working in surgery, control and supply as well as with the patients. Carl, however, wanted to do some traveling. Alice also liked knitting, crocheting, tying quilts, gardening, cooking & baking and playing Skip-Bo with her friends. Alice was preceded in death by her husband Carl in 2001; son Gordon; parents Fred and Anna; sister Minnie Rach and brothers Dick, Fred, Bill, Jack, Harry and Henry; and 2 infant siblings. She is survived by daughter Mrs. Wendell (Harriet) Kimber of Bertha; son Philip (Babe) Backberg of Merrifield, MN; 7 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Mrs. Henry (Irma) Juergens of Island Lake, IL.
