Ellen's parents were Mr. and Mrs. S. T. Raw. When she was sixteen years old she moved to Sheffield with her parents. On December 12, 1888 she married William Hugh Bender in Mason City, Iowa. She was the mother of ten children, two of whom died in infancy.

Herbert and Frances Bender Lewis, of Mason City, and Verda,
Frankle, Wayne. Wilhelmina, and Gerald of Swaledale. Also surviving her were her mother. Mrs. Sarah Raw of Sheffield, four sisters, Mrs. William Benzler of Britt, Mrs. Jake Zimmerman of Sheffield, Mrs. Robert Norton of Rockford, 111., Mrs. Joe Sykes of Swaledale; and three brothers, William Raw, Buffalo, Wyo., Anthony Raw and Arthur Raw of Britt.
She was a member of the Baptist Church.
