When he was 22, Thomas married the widowed Hannah Day Walker about 1848 in Hawkins County. Thomas and Hannah had children whom they named Sarah E., Saletta Jane, Thomas N., and Christina. In 1867, tragically, Hannah died in childbirth with their daughter Hannah K. Berry. With children aged 18, 16, 14, 12, and 4 months, Thomas married Sarai Walker in Hawkins County on July 28, 1867. Thomas and Sarai delighted in the rearing of baby Hannah K. Berry as well as Thomas's other young children from his marriage to Hannah Day. (The 1880 Census indicated that Thomas and Sarah Walker Berry had no children from their own union.) Thomas supported his family by farming in Hawkins County where he lived his entire life.
In 1876 when he was 50, Thomas served as the executor of his father's will.
Thomas Berry, Jr., age 71, died on March 16, 1897, in Hawkins County and was buried in the Berry Cemetery there, surrounded by many of his family members.
