John Chester Holst, 93, was born November 15, 1911, at Irwin to Peter and Florence (Sanders) Holst. He died September 7, 2005, in Gordon. Graveside services were held at Greenwood Cemetery on Sept. 9. Chet is survived by his daughter and son-in-law: Peggy and Robert Marchant of Chadron; sister-in-law: Bernadine Empkey of Valentine; and cousins, nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Chloe Empkey; son: Robert John; sister and brother-in-law: Serene ìRedî and Thelma Holst; brother and sister-in-law: Spence and Phyllis "Billie" Holst; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Frank and Violet Pennock; and brothers-in-law: Charles and Robert Empkey. Chet owned/managed/operated many bars including the Western Bar in Wasta, S.D.; Crystal Bar in Rapid City; Pat's Bar, Hub Bar, and Buddy Bar in Chadron. He was a good poker player, and Chet subsidized their income when there were "good games" in the area. Chet served in the U.S. Army 4th Infantry Division from November 15, 1943 to February 22, 1946. His tour of duty included England, Germany, France, and Belgium.Chet was a member of The American Legion, the VFW, Eagles, Elks, DAV, and the Tri-State Old-Time Cowboys Association.
