Hiram and Mattie lived on a farm south of Farragut after their marriage, then moved to a farm near Tabor, Iowa, and prior to his death purchased land near Hemingford, Nebraska.
In 1917, Hiram was thrown from a horse and was kicked in the head, leaving him unconscious. He was taken to the hospital in Alliance, Nebraska, where he died at the age of 42 years 5 months 11 days. When he died his oldest child was close to 8 years old and his youngest was only six weeks old. After the death of Mattie six years later, the children were raised in Fremont County, Iowa, by relatives.
