Luther Dolby was the son of an "Impressed British Seaman" who came to America and "Married a Connecticut Woman", according to written family history. He is known to have two siblings, Stephen Dolby (1796), who married Anna Lyon, and Polly Dolby (1798). It is unclear what happened to his parents, but Luther was apprenticed out at an early age, winding up in the New York City area. He married Margaret Casey c.1815. After the birth of their first two children, Mary Jane Dolby (1816-1905) and Stephen Dolby (1818-1820), the family headed west to Ohio in 1820 in a wagon. Little Stephen became ill and died along the way. The family first settled in Butler County, Ohio, where 4 more children were born, Drucilla Dolby (abt.1821), Heldreth Dolby (abt.1823), George Hiram Dolby (1827-1885) and William Hastings Dolby (1829-1914). Sometime in the mid-1830s, the family moved to Ripley County, Indiana, where Margaret died in early 1843. Luther remarried 19 November 1846 to Elizabeth Richardson, a Widow, and they stayed in Indiana until 1870, afterward moving to Clermont County, Ohio. Elizabeth died in early 1872, and Luther then married Nancy Salt on 7 November 1872. Luther also married Maria Bannin on 13 November 1879, who died a little more than a year later in late 1880, and Elizabeth Ashburn on 29 December 1883, who died in 1889. Two of his wives are buried near him in the Nicholsville Cemetery. Luther lived in Nicholsville until his death in 1892, just a few weeks short of his 97th birthday.
