MARION, Ind., Feb. 1 - John H. Case, age 71, senior vice-commander of the Department of Indiana, Grand Army of the Republic, died Sunday at his home here after several weeks' sickness.
Mr. Case enlisted in the Civil war at the first call for troops in 1861, when he was sixteen years old, offering his services as a drummer boy; but he was soon accepted in the cavalry and served for three years in the Ninth Indiana cavalry. He later was a member of the Thirty-sixth Indiana infantry until the close of the war, being mustered out of the service before he was twenty-one years old. His home was in Newcastle when he enlisted in the army. He had lived in Marion continuously for the last thirty-six years.
Mr. Case is survived by the widow, two sons, Charles L. Case of Bunnell, Fla., and Walter Case of El Paso, Tex., and four daughters, Mrs. Helen Esler of Freeport, Ill., and Mrs. Orda Weesner and Misses Florence and Bessie Case of Marion.
