Eleanor Eichhorn Walden, 88, of the 4000 block of Holly Ave., died Saturday, Jan. 24, 1998, in a local health care center.
She was born in Lonaconing, Md., and had retired from the Norfolk Public Schools as a music teacher and consultant.
Mrs. Walden received her bachelor of music degree from the University of West Virginia and did her graduate studies at Penn State University. In 1940 she was invited to organize a chapel choir at the Norfolk Naval Base Chapel, where she served as choir director for 28 years. She held many positions and received numerous awards in the music community of the Tidewater area. In 1965 she was the first teacher to receive the City of Norfolk's Annual Public Service Award for Norfolk's Outstanding City Employee. In 1965 and 1967 she was sponsored by the Department of Defense to take one of her Nonuette choral groups on tour to the Caribbean and Europe to entertain the troops at our American military bases.
In her retirement years she organized a chorus for the C & P Telephone Company which continued under her guidance for many years. This group visited and performed at many different functions, but they took great joy in performing at nursing homes and providing music for people in their ''golden years.''
Mrs. Walden was a member of Royster Memorial Presbyterian Church, where she served as choir master for many years. She also substituted as choir master and accompanist for many Tidewater area churches. She was a member of the Virginia Music Education Association and served on the staff of the Virginia Music Camp at Massanetta. She was a past president and life member of the Norfolk-Virginia Beach Soroptimist Club.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Murray H. Walden; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Cox Funeral Home by Dr. John R. Monroe. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 8 p.m. today for visitation with friends. Memorial contributions may be made to Camp Civitan, P.O. Box 883, Norfolk, Va. 23501.
