DURHAM - Mary Woodworth Sawyer, 90, died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2008, of pneumonia.

Born in Concord, Mrs. Sawyer was the daughter of the late Edward K. Woodworth and Clara Holt Woodworth. She was predeceased in 1983 by her daughter, Ellen, and her sisters Constance Goss of Madbury in 1994 and Margaret D'Arcy of Durham in 1997.

Living in Durham all her adult life until she moved to Dover's Langdon Place in 2005, Mrs. Sawyer graduated from the University of Michigan, where her former husband, Philip, received his Ph.D. in zoology. She was a teacher in the Oyster River school system until her retirement in 1980. Mrs. Sawyer had many interests and friends throughout her retirement years. She helped run the Thrift and Consignment Shop at St. George's Episcopal Church, sang alto in several local choral groups and was active in New Hampshire's Society of Colonial Dames. She was often seen volunteering at Channel 11, New Hampshire Public Television, and could be spotted swimming laps at the Dover Pool. Perhaps her greatest joy was being with her friends and family. She particularly enjoyed her lifelong association with her lunch club buddies.

Mrs. Sawyer leaves her grandson, Elijah V. Odell, his wife, Leslie, and her great-granddaughter, Ruby Ellen, all of Vail, Colo. She also leaves two nieces, Jenifer D'Arcy of Effingham and Susan D'Arcy Schultz of New York City and her nephew, Lane Woodworth Goss of North Andover, Mass. Her grandnieces and grandnephews include Donald D'Arcy McKinnon of Rochester, James A. McKinnon of Thornton, Gerald D'Arcy Schultz and Margaret Virginia Schultz of New York City, Edward Woodworth Goss of Wellesley, Mass., Charles Lane Goss II of Madbury, and Philip Johnston Goss of North Andover, Mass.

Memorial services will be held March 3 at 11 a.m. at St. George's Church in Durham.

Services will be conducted by her family friend the Rev. Marshall Hunt.
