Spanish-American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on June 22, 1899 for his actions as a private with Company F, 10th Infantry Regiment, US Army, on July 1, 1898, at the Battle of San Juan Hill near Santiago, Cuba. He enlisted in the US Army in May 1898 and was discharged a year later, He was one of five men who were awarded the Medal of Honor on that day for rescuing wounded soldiers in the heat of battle. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Gallantly assisted in the rescue of the wounded from in front of the lines and under heavy fire from the enemy." His Medal of Honor is currently on display at the Justin Potter Library in Smithville, Tennessee.
