Spanish American War Medal of Honor Recipient. He served as a Corporal in Company D, 17th U.S. Infantry. At the Battle El Caney, Cuba, July 1 1898, Corporal Shepherd's company was held down by heavy enemy fire. With complete disregard for his own life, he went out to the front lines and rescued fellow wounded comrades. For gallantry in action, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on August 21, 1899.
