William and Emma had a son they named Roy S. in 1901, but he also died in infancy. They welcomed a daughter they named Edna in 1902 and a son they named Alvin Frederick in 1906. I caught up with the family again on the 1910 Census, living on Michigan St. in Argos, Marshall Co., Indiana, where William was the proprietor of a hardware store. Emma reported that three of her six children were living which is consistent with the previous census and living children Orvie, Edna and Alvil on that census.
Sometime between 1910 and 1918, William and Emma moved the family to South Bend, St. Joseph Co., Indiana where they resided on Corby St. William was working as a carpenter for a construction company, and 21-year-old Orvie as a laborer in a construction company. On his 1918 WWI registration, Orvie was working as a drill press operator for Oliver Tractor Plow Co in South Bend.
On 3 Jun 1920, Orvie married Fern Mae Holbrook in Chicago, Cook Co., Illinois. Daughter Virginia Lucille arrived on 24 Mar 1921 while they were still living in Chicago. They had a second daughter they named Jean Marie.
A 1925 and 1928 city directory show Orvie and Fern living on Corby St. in South Bend. Orvie was a driver in 1925 and Fern was employed as a stenographer for a home insurance company. In 1928, Orvie's occupation was given in the abbreviated form "Exp" (not sure what that stands for).
Orvie died of Tuberculosis early in 1929 on January 12th at age 30. Fern remarried. Her second husband's name was Frank H. Marsh.
