Rev. Robert Lee (Bob) Gore, Sr.

Bob was born on 30 Jul 1921 in Rocky Mount, NC, to Daniel Curtis "Curt" and Ella Mae Alexander Gore. He was their first-born son, and his little brother, Daniel Fletcher "Dan", didn't come along until 10 years later. By that time, his family had moved to Roanoke Rapids, NC, where his mother was born.

Bob left school after he graduated the 8th grade and started working in a J.P. Stevens & Co. cotton mill as a weaver in Roanoke Rapids, NC. He met his first wife, Lillian, who was from GA, while working on the farm where she and her family were boarders. They were married and had their first child, Priscilla Lee, who was born on 18 Nov 1939, by the time they both turned 18. Priscilla (or sometimes spelled Prisilla) remained in Roanoke Rapids, and eventually married James Lewis Key, who was born in 1938. It is not known if they are still alive or had any children at this time. Bob's father, Curt, some of his uncles, and his brother, Dan, remained working in the cotton mills until they retired, but Bob had a different calling in life.

He soon became a traveling Southern Baptist Evangelist Minister, who settled in a few small NC, SC, and IN communities, where he had family members like aunts, uncles, and cousins, to temporarily lead their churches throughout his lifetime. The fact that his extended family members would help him get settled for a little while is why he picked those particular states when he would move around. When he was not preaching the Gospel in a church or a revival tent, he was also a shoe, furniture, and mobile home salesman. He could sell just about anything. He also was considered a "country peddler" who sold bedspreads, Amway cleaning products, and other odds and ends by traveling around with his wares in the trunk of his car, with his kids in tow sometimes, to places where not many stores were built for the local residents to buy needed items. He even spent one summer being a third shift cook on a shrimping boat, just so he could make ends meet.

He had health problems throughout his life, starting with falling off of the front porch and landing on a rusty nail, right in the middle of his foot, when he was 6 years old in 1927. This was before they had medicine that could treat the gangrene, possibly from tetanus, which infected his right leg. He stayed in a body cast in the hospital for over a year, and came out with a permanent limp in his leg, so he had to wear special shoes for the remainder of his life. It caused him to suffer a lot, but he kept on going.

He ended up getting married a total of 6 times (1 - Lillian Bolden Crew (mother of Priscilla Lee Key), 2 - Unknown (no known children), 3 - Emma Mae Jones (Emmerling) (mother of their 3 children - Von Gregory, Cyd Vivian, and Jonathan Curtis), 4 - Mary Louise Hudson (mother of their 6 children - Mitzi Marie, Jill Elizabeth, Robert Lee Jr., John Curtis, David Marshall, and Mark Emory), 5 - Frances Dodson Hackney or vice-versa on the maiden and previous married name (no children together), and 6 - Elizabeth Smith (Stout) Gore (whose previous husband of 35 years had died soon before Elizabeth and Bob met (no children together). His children from his different wives never got to know each other because of the distance and time between them all until they made contact with each other on the internet many years after he passed away. Bob died too young of lung cancer, hypertension, and a stroke to ever meet any of his 22 grandchildren, and 10 great-grandchildren, just from his 4th wife, Mary, with many more to be born in the future. (It is yet unknown just how many grandchildren and great-grandchildren that he has at the time of this posting in Feb 2015.)

Note: His 4th son, John Curtis, passed away in his sleep on 3 May 2009, at the age of 42.

***************

Bob lived a large and full life, but had many troubles along the rocky road he walked. That's probably why he preached so hard when he stood in front of a pulpit. He would stomp one hand and one foot, and praise the Lord as loud as he could. He wanted to help others that had the same problems the he had in life, and felt the need to keep trying no matter what was thrown at him as he carved his way through this world.

He was so well adapted at speaking and preaching the Gospel that he even became an auctioneer when he was in his late 50s. His gift of gab was silenced, though, when he was only 64, yet he left a long line of Gore descendants in his wake that will forever love and miss him. His story has been told now, so it can be laid to rest with him, too. He's been forgiven, and that all he ever wanted out of life to begin with. May God give him peaceful rest forever.
