Death of Samuel Caldwell
Another of our counties oldest settlers has passed away. Mr. Samuel Caldwell, of Delaware Township, died on Friday, August 25. He was born February 25th, 1809, on the farm where he died and with the exception of one brief interval, he had resided all his life. His remains were interred in the Delaware cemetery, a portion of the same farm. Mr. Caldwell never took a prominent part in public affairs, but he was a close reader and well informed on the general topics of the day. He was an active, consistent Christian for many years, being a member first of the Associate reformed and afterward of the U. P. Church. He served as ruling elder for forty-three years. His last sickness was accompanied by great pain and distress, yet in the intervals of his suffering he communed with God and the end was calm and perfect peace. The funeral on the Sabbath was largely attended a noticeable feature being the number of aged people present, among them Mr. Brown, of Greenville, almost ninety, William Alsworth, of Moravia, Lawrence County. Mr. Donaldson, of Clarksville and Jacob Kaufman, of Delaware, all over eighty and many others who have completed their three score years and ten.

Note: A score is twenty years.
