Oscar Coates was born November 17, 1882 in Madison County, North Carolina. His parents were James Gabriel Coates and Alice Martha Buckner. He enlisted in the army in 1901. Oscar later changed his name to Martin F. Hayes. On September 5, 1906, he married Mary Marie Meyer in Cincinnati, Ohio. They had the following children: John Henry Hayes, Charles Hayes, Arthur Hayes, Quillen P. Hayes, and Ethel (Hayes) Bivens. After Mary's death, he married Bettie Emmaline Adams in 1919 and had the following children: William Hayes, Lloyd George Hayes, Edith (Hayes) Clibern, and Rinthey (Hayes) Llewellyn. He married Opal Cline later in life. Shortly before he passed away, he went back to using his birth name Oscar Coates.
