LAGRANGE CIVIL WAR VETERAN DIED FRIDAY

Taps sounded Friday for one of the few remaining veterans of the Civil War, John Tobias Bower Sr., who passed away at the home of his son John T. Bower, Jr., west of LaGrange at the age of 85 years, says the LaGrange Indicator. Mr Bower has been a resident of this community for sixty years except for a few years spent in the Soldiers Home at St. James, Mo., and the Soldiers Home at Quincy, Ill. During his active life he had been one of the prominent, successful farmers of the community. His rugged, upright character gained for him the respect of those who knew him, while his companionable disposition won him a wide circle of friends. Mr. Bower was born Jan. 1, 1841, In Blishausen, Wuertenburg, Germany, and was confirmed in the Lutheran Church in May 1854. He came to this country in 1854. He served in the Union army, in Company E, 70th Ohio Veteran Volunteer Infantry, from 1861 to 1865. In September 1866 he was married to Ellen A. Coughlin of Jerseyville, III. To this union were born eleven children, eight of whom survive, namely, Mrs. J. M. Veatch, Ellis Kans ; William F., of Blackwell, Okla.; George H , Weaubleau, Mo.; Mrs. Edward Huner, Center, Mo.; and Mrs. Fred Prisner, Mrs. Kate Gamm, John T. and James L. Bower of this county. He came to Lewis County, Mo, in October 1865, where he made his home until his death His wife preceded him in death eight years ago. Twelve of their grandchildren and one great-grandchild survive them. Funeral services were held at the Lutheran Church Sunday afternoon, Rev. P. W Beinke officiating. Interment was in Midway Cemetery, west of town.
