John Matelske was simply known as Grandpa to me. He was a well respected man around town. He lost 2 sons, one Cpl Steve Matelske WW2 invasion of Normandy, and Staff Sgt Leonard Matelske in the Vietnam War. No man should ever lose a son, let alone 2.
He was married to my Grandma Katy. He loved her beyond anything I have ever seen. He cherished her as his lifelong friend. When she passed several years before him, it was evident by his mouring how much he missed her.
I know my Grandpa John was a farmer, having a peanut patch, cotton, corn, wheat from what he told me. When my uncle died in WW2, he sold the farm and moved into Town. Once he moved "to town", he took a job at the ice house...no, not a beer tavern, an actual ice house where they made and shipped out ice blocks. I think he retired at 72.
He loved sitting on the front porch waving at the cars that drove by. It seemed like everyone knew him. He snuck me many a quarters so I could run across the street and get a frostie rootbeer and a snickers.
He had a large family, Charlie (who passed at birth I believe), Bennie, Steve, Billy, David, Blanche (my Mom), Matilda, Leonard, and Christine. My fondest childhood memories are listening to all of them speak at one time!
I miss you Grandpa, and I love you. Thanks for being there...always.
