OBIT: Lebanon, Laclede Co., MO: (1931) MRS. ELIZA JANE VERNON. After a long illness, Mrs. R. E. Vernon died on Sunday, Dec. 13, 1931, afternoon at 3:40 in the family home, on Highway 66, southwest of Lebanon, at the age of 61 years, 4 months and 13 days. She had been ill for about seven months, suffering from heart trouble and complications. On last Thursday she suffered a stroke of paralysis and gradually failed until the end came on Sunday. Funeral services were held on Tuesday morning at 10:00, in the Lebanon Christian Church, Rev. Roy Blalock officiating. Mrs. Vernon formerly was MISS ELIZA JANE ATCHLEY and was a daughter of the late Pryor Atchley, pioneer resident of Dallas Co, where she was born August 24, 1870. In her youth, she was married to JOHN ALEXANDER, and, following his death, she was united in marriage to R. E. VERNON, in 1896. Most of her married life was spent in and near Lebanon. She is survived by her husband; two sons, RHODE VERNON, of Marshall and CLAIBORNE VERNON, at home; three sisters, MRS. L. A. DOUGHTY and MRS. F. A. WEST, of Marshall, and MRS. J. F. E. BREECH, of Springfield; three brothers, George and Charles Atchley of Marshall, and Frank Atchley of Portland, Oregon. Mrs. Vernon was a member of the Washington Church and her life was an example of beautiful Christian womanhood. She was beloved by family and friends and enjoyed the high esteem of all who came in touch with her life.
