John's was a farmer in Texas. He served in Company I, 10th Texas Cavalry, CSA. The 10th Cavalry was involved in actions in Mississippi, Tennessee, and specifically, the Battles of Chickamauga, Chattanooga, Missionary Ridge, and Atlanta. After involvement in defending Mobile, the 10th Cavalry surrendered with other Confederate troops in the Department of Alabama, Mississippi, and East Louisiana. The unit, along with other troops in the department, was the last significant Confederate force east of the Mississippi River to surrender. As a result, very few men remained in service with the unit when it surrendered. The Tenth Texas was later paroled at Meridian, Mississippi.

He married Sarah Jane Latham February 17, 1867 in Cherokee Co., Texas, daughter of William Latham and Betheny Thompson Latham. Sarah was born October 07, 1846 in Bibb Co. Alabama, and died January 04, 1927 in De Leon, Comanche County, Texas. She is also buried in De Leon Cemetery.
