Obituary from the Miami News of the 1890's, Saline County, Missouri

Thomas J. Winning

Death's Doings.

DIED - At his home five miles East of this place, on Monday, June 22nd, 1885. Mr. Thomas J. Winning, in the 54th, year of his age. Mr. Winning was born in Berkeley county Virginia, October 25th, 1831, and when about 10 years of age he moved with his father to this county, where he has since resided. He lived to see his children, two sons and two daughters grow to be men and women. For several years disease has been preying upon him and last spring he spent several months at Excelsior Springs, and returned - as he supposed, much improved. About two weeks ago he was taken down, and on Monday morning, surrounded by his family and friends his spirit broke loose from its tenement of clay and returned to him who gave it. There was no pain, no suffering; he passed away like one falling to sleep. He was a kind husband, and indulgent father and a friend to all mankind; universally loved and highly esteemed by all who knew him. The readers of the NEWS will remember him as "Occasional," our correspondent from Tick. His remains were followed by sorrowing relatives and friends to Mt. Horeb Cemetery, his last resting place on earth. His life was insured in the Farmers and Mechanics Mutual Aid Association of St. Louis, for $1-500. To the bereaved family the NEWS extends its sincere sympathy.

"How sweetly could I lay my head.
Within the cold grave's silent breast,
Where sorrow's tears no more are shed,
No more the ills of life Molest!"

Grave moved to Ridge Park Cemetery, Saline Co., Missouri, Lot 21, Sect. 9
