Hazleton Plain Speaker; Tuesday, November 23, 1954:
John C. Altmiller, 85, of 131 South Cedar street, retired mail carrier, who was honored by the Hazleton Liberty Band on March 1, 1952, when he completed sixty ears as assistant director of that organization, died at his home this morning at 1:15 o'clock. He had been ailing but was about until recently. His late brother, Justus C. Altmiller, director of the band for more than 60 years, died on June 16 last. A native and a life-long resident of Hazleton, Mr. Altmiller had a wide range of affiliations and until his health began to fail, he remained active in many fields. He was the oldest secretary to serve the Liberty Band...

When he retired 20 years ago as a mail carrier in this city, Mr. Altmiller had completed 42 years of service in many capacities at the post office. He began his career there as a young man when George Martin was postmaster. Like his late brother, "Yiast" Altmiller, he gave much of his time and support to the Hazleton Liberty Band in which he played for many years. He helped launch the drive for the new home of the band on East Juniper street and for its remodeling some years ago...

Mr. Altmiller was wed to Anna C. Fey who died on January 11, 1932. Surviving are these children: Ruth, widow of Dr. William H. Jones; Miss Ethel Altmiller, teacher in the Grebey Jr. High School; Mrs. Florence Walters of this city, whose husband, Conrad Walters, died six months ago; Karl J. Altmiller, pharmacist of Bethlehem; and Miss Martha Altmiller of the Plain Speaker office staff. Surviving are four sisters, all of Hazleton, Mrs. John F. Wetterau, Mrs. Adele, wife of Dr. George F. Burkhardt, Mrs. Howard Weyhenmeyer, wife of the president of Jere Woodring & Co., and Mrs. Hilda A., widow of Dr. J. Raymond Taylor.

The funeral will be held from the family home on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock with Rev. Allan H. Roth officiating. Burial will be in the Vine street cemetery. Viewing will be on Wednesday and Thursday nights from 7 to 9 o'clock.
