Until the Great Depression when her family situation plummeted, Frances "Fran" Heflin had a privileged childhood. Sadly, an automobile accident while she was being driven to school injured her in such a way that she was unable to have children. She would have been a great mother; however, she instead became rather a "fashionista" and socialite. Always perfectly manicured and coifed, sewing was a field in which she excelled. In one newspaper article, it was expressed that "Frances Heflin may be the top seamstress in the nation"! Fran also loved swimming and golf, spending many hours a week at the local Merrillville Country Club.
