Resident of County Dies.
Ora Melvin Schemerhorn, 75 longtime resident of Huntington County, died at 4:16pm Thursday in the Huntington County Hospital where he had been since last Saturday after suffering a stroke.
Mr. Schemerhorn who spent most of his life in Plum Tree and the Warren, Indiana communities and had been a resident of the County Home since September 21, 1959. He earlier made his home with a cousin, Mrs. Hazel Confer. He was a timber cutter by trade.
Mr. Schemerhorn was born May 7, 1885, to Abraham Schermerhorn and Elizabeth Chalmers Schermerhorn. He married Maude "Maudie" Harper McClain Schemerhorn June 19, 1920 in Cadillac, Michigan. She died May 30, 1943.
Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Mabel E. Spencer; New Castle, Indiana and Mrs. Margaret Chandler Blitzburg, Germany; step daughters Mrs. Alvin Strong, Otsego, Michigan and Mrs. Lyle Baker, Kalamazoo, Michigan; four grandchildren, two sisters; Mrs. Bertha Whalen, Reed City, Michigan; and Mrs. Ruth Harper, Kalamazoo, Michigan; and three brothers, William Schemerhorn, Olean, New York; and Clarence and Howard Schemerhorn of California. A brother and three sisters are dead.
Friends may call after 7pm, Friday in the H. Brown and Son Funeral Home at Warren, Indiana where services will be held at 2pm Saturday with the Rev. George Milliard, pastor of the Congregational Christian Church officiating. Burial will be in the Lancaster Cemetery, Huntington County, Indiana.
