Graveside services for Anna May Harris, 81, Lawrence, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Memorial Park Cemetery with the Rev. John "Mickey" Essary officiating.
Mrs. Harris died Tuesday, June 18, 1996, at Brandon Woods Retirement Community.
She was born March 12, 1915, in Kansas City, Mo., the daughter of Andy Johnson and Leo Cordelia Swearengin Tanner.
Mrs. Harris attended Missouri schools and later moved to Lawrence, where she attended Kansas University for two years. She lived most of her married life in rural Lawrence and was a cook at several Lawrence restaurants.
She was a member of India Family and Community Education group and served on several local, county and state level committees. She was a former member of the India school board and was community leader for Cottonwood 4-H Club for several years. She was named Lawrence Woman of the Year in 1964 and received state recognition for her poetry and short stories.
Mrs. Harris was known for her annual Christmas Open House, which featured a tree with more than 800 ornaments, many of which were handmade or gifts.
She married Vernon D. "Jack" Harris on Feb. 14, 1937, in Lawrence. He died May 15, 1994.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara L. Kretschmer, Ethan, S.D., Kathleen K. Stutts, Bellevue, Neb., and Claudia A. Mirabella-McFadden, North Pole, Alaska; a sister, Julia E. Boone, Sacramento, Calif.; a half-sister, Dorothy Van Swearingen, Springfield, Mo.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
