PLATTSBURGH — Dorothy M. Lacombe, 91, of Lake Forest Drive, Plattsburgh and formerly of Peru, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011, at the CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh.

She was the beloved wife of Ignatius Lacombe for 62 years.

She was born in Hopkinton, N.Y., Nov. 17, 1919, the daughter of Carl and Gertrude (Ramsey) Cutler.

Dorothy was a member at St. Augustine's Church in Peru for more than 55 years and served as a Eucharistic Minister. Upon moving to Plattsburgh in 2001, she joined St. Peter's Church.

She graduated from Massena High School and received her diploma as a registered professional nurse in 1941 from A. Barton Hepburn School of Nursing, in Ogdensburg. She was employed until 1942 as a head nurse at Hepburn Hospital. She then entered the U.S. Army Nurse Corps as a 2nd Lieutenant, as U.S. involvement in World War II increased. In January 1943, while sailing to England on the Queen Elizabeth, which had been converted to a troop ship carrying 15,000 soldiers, Dorothy met her future husband, Sergeant Ignatius Lacombe. In September 1944, they were married in the chapel of the Army's 1700-bed tent hospital in Normandy, France. She served with the 50th and 52nd General Hospitals in England, Scotland and France during the war.

Following her discharge from the Army, Dorothy was employed in a medical clinic on the St. Regis Mohawk Indian reservation. She gave up her nursing career for a number of years to raise her family, but after her older children had completed high school, Dorothy resumed her nursing career at CVPH Medical Center in Plattsburgh. She later took a nursing position at the Clinton County Health Department, from which she retired in 1979.

Her memberships over the years included the Peru Girl Scouts, Clinton County Office for the Aging, Veteran of Foreign Wars Post 309, American Legion Post 20, 50th General Hospital Association, AARP, C.S.E.A and the Nurses Association.

Dorothy was an avid bridge player, playing several times weekly at various locations; and in the evening, she enjoyed a game of Scrabble with Ignatius. She read her books daily, and she and Ignatius loved traveling through the United States, Canada and Europe. One of their most memorable trips was a return to Normandy, France, in 1994 for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. Even well into her 90s, Dorothy made an effort to keep mind and body active by getting out of her apartment daily to shop, have a meal, play cards or visit her family and friends.

Survivors include her children; three daughters and sons-in-laws: Dorothy and Patrick Gregory of West Tisbury, Mass., Mary Lacombe of Raleigh, N.C., Barbara and Ronald McGee of Plattsburgh; four sons and daughters-in-law: Ignatius and Violet Lacombe of Plattsburgh, Pierre and Kathy Lacombe of Florence, N.J., André and Paula Calkins Lacombe of Plattsburgh, Christopher and Suzanne Lacombe of Peru and Salt Lake City, Utah; 13 grandchildren: Shannon, Timothy, Samuel, Jordan, Christopher, Jason, Marcus, Monica, Jillian, André Paul, Jocelyn, Marcie and Colleen; and eight great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Varick and Catherine Cutler of Lansdowne, Md.; five sisters, Elnora, Velma, Marjorie, Cynthia and Elizabeth; five brothers, Gerald, Carl, James, George and Lyndon; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her parents; and husband Ignatius Lacombe, March 16, 2007.

Calling hours will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 16, at the Hamilton Funeral Home, 294 Mannix Road, Peru.
