Andrew was born Knut Andreas Knutsen on the island of Karmøy (Nordstokke) farm to Canute Canuteson and Anna Karine Olsdtr. He came to America at the age of 2 with his parents and older brother Ole. They sailed on the brig "Favoriten" which travelled from Stavanger to New York.
Andrew's mother died of cholera on board the canal boat which was taking them to Ottawa, Illinois (Fox River Settlement) where Andrew, his widowed father and brother subsequently settled. They remained in Illinois about a year before moving to Texas at the urging of Kleng Peerson. The party initally settled in Dallas County, but a few years later they purchased land in Bosque County and moved there.
