Richard Andrews Wood, HM1 was born in Denver Colorado in 1921. He soon left the environment of the Rockies for the sunny climate of California. It’s a huge state that fosters huge ambitions that prompted Rich to aspire to a life of a banker. He journeyed that long path until he reached the status of Bookkeeper, but found he couldn’t continue because the war came along.

In 1942, he entered the Navy at San Diego. He underwent basis training and Corps School in that fair city and then went north to Mare Island Naval Hospital. Shortly afterwards he was sent to Pearl Harbor where he helped to commission the fabulous Aiea Heights Naval Hospital.

Woody reported aboard the USS Indiana in 1943 and rode out the rest of the conflict on the “wagon”. He was aboard for the bombardments that proceeded the invasions of Saipan, Iwo Jima, and Okinawa. He also participated in the first bombardment of the Japanese Homeland in 1945.

After the cessations of hostilities he went aboard the USS Los Angeles and USS Raby, and in 1947 he was sent to the Navy Dispensary at Washington D.C. His next sea duty was on the USS Des Moines and the USS President Jackson.

Rich reported to the Corps School in January 1951. He was assigned to the Training Aids department where he has gone about his work in he most consistent and efficient manner. He is probably one of the most well-liked members of the staff. He never seems to have too much to say but certainly smiles enough.
