His son James J. died in WWI and is buried in Meuse-Argonne American Cemetery and Memorial in Romagne, France.

His brother, William R. Borders, was the President and owner of the Bank of Sparta and part owner of a coal company in Randolph County. He died in the Missouri Athletic Club fire in St. Louis. They closed the bank after his death. He was never married.
