Philippine Insurrection Medal of Honor Recipient. He was issued the award on March 8, 1902 for his actions as a corporal with the 36th Infantry, US Volunteers, US Army on September 28, 1899, near Porac, Luzon, Philippine Islands. The son of a US Army officer, he joined the Kansas Infantry, US Army. in May 1898 and was sent to the Philippines as a member of the volunteer forces. Following his Medal of Honor action, he was promoted to the rank of 1st lieutenant of volunteers. Following his service in the Philippines, he participated in the Mexican Border Campaign. During World War I, he served as a officers' training instructor, first at Fort Riley, Kansas, then at Fort Snelling, Minnesota. He was then assigned to the War Department in Washington DC as an assistant adjutant general of the US. Army, in charge of enlisted men. In 1919, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for extraordinary heroism in action on April 26, 1899, at Calumpit, Philippine Islands, against an armed enemy. From 1918 until 1923 he served as the Secretary for the General Service Schools at Forth Leavenworth, Kansas and was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He died from sudden complications of surgery related to the removal of a hernia at the age of 45. His Medal of Honor citation reads: "Charged alone a body of the enemy and captured a captain."
