He attended schools in Ranger and Breckenridge. He graduated from Breckenridge High School and Ranger Junior College. He attended Hardin-Simmons University.

He was a veteran of the US Navy during World War II. He served 32 months in the South Pacific. He was in the Army National Guard from 1945-1961.

He married Wanda Bailes on 3 November 1945 at Woodson.

He was a member of the First Baptist church and the American Legion. He retired from Baxley Manufacturing in 1990 where he had been involved in inventory control.

Survivors: wife; son - Ronnie Thornton; two daughters - Mrs. W. Don "Kay" Smith and Mrs. Donald "Marilyn" Coast; three granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother - Weldon Thornton
