Lt. Bates served in Col. Gideon Burt's Regiment for a very brief period. His record says he served from June 16-June 22, 1782 at Springfield and Northampton MA suppressing the insurgents.

He married Hannah Bradford Arthur who was a widow from that same MA area before moving to Martinsburg, NY in 1802.

Samuel Bates was born in 1738 Brimfield, Hampden, Massachusetts. He married Eunice Sherman in 1762. Births recorded in Brimfield for Samuel and Eunice were:

Wife, Eunice Sherman Bates, died in 1775 Brimfield, Massachusetts. Samuel married Keziah Burt [believed to be Keziah Moffatt, widow of Benjamin Burt] in 1779 Brimfield. Keziah died in 1802.

Samuel Bates Sr would have married Hannah Bradford after 1802 but before 1813 when they appear as husband and wife on a deed in Jefferson Co, NY [Deed Book Vol H, pg 267] with his son, Samuel Bates Jr. Samuel Bates, Sr, Samuel Bates Jr and Moses Bates all appear on the 1810 Hounsfield, Jefferson, NY census.

Samuel Bates Sr wrote his will on 20 Apr 1820 in Lewis Co, NY and it was submitted for probate on 7 Aug 1820. [Lewis Co NY Wills, Vol A, pg 62]. Named in the will are:
Wife, Hannah Bates
Heirs of eldest daughter Chloe Holloway [assumed deceased]
Eldest son Rufus Bates
Heirs of sons, Moses Bates and Samuel Bates Jr [assumed both were deceased]
Second daughter [not named]
Youngest daughter, Keziah Hitchcock
