"Wife of Samuel Handy, Born at Bayou DeSara, La."

The headstone was recorded in the 1950s by Mrs. H. Flood Madison for the DAR's "Louisiana Tombstone Inscriptions" series, Vol. 6, Page 147. It was also recorded in a July, 1991 survey with the below inscription.

According to Dr. E. Russ Williams' book "Founding Families of the Ouachita Valley", Harriet was the first wife of Samuel Handy. They were married May 15, 1828 in Feliciana Parish. This conflicts with the date of birth recorded above, since Harriet would have been 11 years old! The above date recorded by the DAR may be a mistaken transcription, possibly 1809 instead of 1819. Samuel states in the Succession records that she died August 9, 1844, which again conflicts with the above dates. They had the following children: Charles C., Emily P., George M., Henry F. and Samuel.

A F.A.G. suggested edit in 2019 contained the following: Family Bible owned by Mrs. J. M. Williams, Crystal Springs, Miss
From Everglades chapter, Miami, Fla
"Harriett Flower was born Feb 9th, 1810"
"Samuel Handy and Harriett Flower were married May 15, 1828"
"Harriett Handy died July 4th, 1844 aged 33 years 4 months 6 days"
