Dorothy Bjerke Basol Fogel, 83, of Mayville, ND, formerly of Hope, ND, passed away Monday, January 26, 2009, at the Luther Memorial Home in Mayville.

Dorothy Ann Birgitte was born October 2, 1925 to Otto and Olida (Hoglund) Bjerke. Dorothy grew up near Buxton, ND, attending rural elementary school and graduated from Mayville High School. She began nurses training at St. Luke's Hospital School of Nursing but was called home to attend to her ill mother. Dorothy received a teacher's certificate and taught in rural schools for a number of years in the Buxton/Mayville area.

Dorothy married Leonard Basol of rural Portland on April 12, 1950. As newlyweds, they lived in Hillsboro and Williston ND, prior to purchasing the Norance Lee farm in Sherbrooke Township near Finley ND in 1955. There they created a home for their six children until their retirement in 1984.

Dorothy worked at the Mayville Union Hospital as a nurse's aide for twenty-five years. She was passionately involved in all organizations or activities she undertook such as, foster parenting, Bang Lutheran Church, the PTA, the Democratic Party, and Sons of Norway. She loved the state of North Dakota, the lakes, reading, dancing, playing cards, crocheting, traveling, including her trips to Norway, and especially spending time with her family and friends.

Widowed in 1988, Dorothy married Willard Fogel of Moorhead, MN on December 1, 1990. They divided their time between their homes in Mayville and Mesa, AZ until February 2003 when she became a resident at Luther Memorial Home.

Dorothy is survived by her brother, Duane (Iva Mae) Bjerke, of Buxton ND, her children and their spouses; John and Donna (Iszler) Basol of Bloomfield, IN, Lenore (Basol) and Wayne Wermager of West Fargo, ND, Loren and Renae (Grinde) Basol of Portland, ND, Kevin and Roberta (Gummer) Basol of St Cloud, MN, Mark and Julie (Nelson) Basol of North Ferrisburg, VT, and Blaine and Cory (Schmitt) Basol of Mayville; five grandsons, John A. Basol, Benjamin Basol, Jerod Basol, Travis Basol, and Craig Basol; four granddaughters, Shaina (Wermager) Huovinen, Terryl (Wermager) Johnson, Nicole (Basol) Mach, and Seraphina Basol; seven great grandchildren; foster son, Tim Olson; stepson, Curt Fogel; stepdaughter, Barbara Wallace; and several step grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Leonard Basol, her granddaughter, Tiffany Basol, husband, Willard Fogel, and stepson, Bob Fogel.

Memorials may be directed to Luther Memorial Home, the Alzheimer's Association, the Cystic Fibrosis Association, or the charity of one's choice.

Visitation: Will be held Friday, January 30, 2009 at Baker Funeral Home in Mayville, ND from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. and will resume one hour prior to the service at the church.

Funeral: 4 p.m. on Saturday, January 31, 2009 at Bang Lutheran Church rural Portland, ND.

Burial: Bang Cemetery, rural Portland, ND.
