Eldest child of Verne Clement Church and Katherine Shebat Church, Jim was born in Minneapolis on November 28, 1927.
Child of the Depression, teenager during WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy before returning to Minnesota where he enrolled at St. John's University in Collegeville, later transferring to the St. Paul Seminary to complete divinity studies.
Ordained in 1957, he served parishes in the Minneapolis-St. Paul area for 13 years prior to his resignation in 1970. Subsequently, he worked in the financial industry and, in retirement, spent several years with the U.S. Census Bureau.
Jim and his first wife, Carol Bauer, welcomed their daughter, Laura, in 1973. Much later he gained a stepson with his marriage to Jan Alden in 1999.
At the time of his death, he is survived by his wife, Jan; his sister, Mary-Kay (Pat) Murray; his daughter, Laura; his stepson Brennan (Nisha) Alden and granddaughter, Nina, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
The funeral mass will be conducted at the Church of St. Mary of the Lake, 105 North Forestview Lane, Plymouth, MN, on Tuesday, October 25, at 10:30 a.m., preceded by a gathering at 9:30 a.m. Lunch will follow. Inurnment will take place later in Boise.
