Bengal Horse Artillery, Indian Army. On September 16, 1857, at Deli, India, after the capture of a magazine, attacks were made on the post by the enemy, whom under cover of heavy cross-fire, set fire to a thatched roof. This fire was extinguished, but the roof was again set alight when Lieutenant Renny mounted to the top of the wall of the magazine and flung several sticks of shells with lighted fuses into the enemy. Thanks to his immediate effect, the attacks became feeble and soon ceased altogether. For gallantry in action, he was invested with his Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Windsore Castle on November 9, 1860 and he later achieved the rank of Major General.
